The news comes after Theresa May officially began the Brexit process by triggering Article 50 — but how has the pound held up? The market was shocked that Leave won June's referendum on Britain's place in Europe, seeing traders rush to sell of sterling and the pound crash to 30 year lows, but nothing unexpected happened today.

Sadly, while the news of the process formally beginning has hardly raised an eyebrow from interested traders, the pound is well down on its position before the referendum happened.

Over the past few months, the pound has risen at every hint that we might be able to stay inside the single market, and fallen every time people have hinted we won't.

The movement of the pound in the months and years that Brexit is negotiated is likely to be linked to how close to a 'soft' pound rises or 'hard' pound falls Brexit we arrive at. That means from now on, information coming from the EU as well as the UK regarding the negotiations will be as important as each other in seeing the pound move against the euro.
